Windows: Change network adapter's "ProfileName"

Sometimes the network adapters profile names get messed up in Windows. It happened to me a few times already that the displayed value was either outdated (I've connected to another network but the profile name didn't get updated) or it shows a string that is more confusing than helpful.

If you still don't know what I mean with "profile name" here are two screenshots to clarify:

Luckily there is a simple way to change the profile name.
For this open the Registry Editor (regedit) and go to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles

Among the displayed profiles find the one that you want to change by looking for the corresponding ProfileName key. Now its just a matter of double-clicking the value and changing it. These changes don't even need a reboot. The next time you open "Network Connections" the new profile name will bet set.
